Coronavirus rule is changing for weddings and funerals taking place in Wales today

A number of changes to coronavirus restrictions in Wales are in effect as of today.

The Welsh government announced on Friday that it would take a four-week break to substantially ease restrictions in the country, given the importance of the new Delta variant, which now accounts for around 97% of cases in North Wales.

However, the First Minister said there will be some minor changes in several areas, such as the potential increase in the number of people allowed to attend funerals and weddings.

Here is a full list of the changes taking effect across Wales today:

  • The number of people who can attend a wedding or civil partnership or funeral service organized by a company in an enclosed building such as a hotel is determined by the size of the venue and a risk assessment. It was limited to 30 indoors. According to the new rules, there is no national guest limit.
  • Small basic music and comedy bars can be operated on the same basis as restaurants such as pubs and cafes.
  • Elementary school children of the same school contact group or bubble can stay in an outdoor dormitory.
  • Pilot events in theater, sports and other fields will also continue in June and July.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the Prime Minister said: “Although we will be delaying major changes to the regulations, we are making some minor changes to make them more understandable and applicable in everyday life.

“We’re going to start reopening outdoor dormitories starting with elementary school age children.

“We’re going to change the rules to bring basic music and comedy venues into line with hospitality rules.

“We will update the regulations to reflect the latest findings on how companies can take all reasonable steps to reduce the risk on their premises and clarify the two meter separation rules for groups of six.

“Our program of pilots in theater, sports and other areas will continue through June and July to test how larger numbers of people can gather together safely.”
