Members of a Binghamton-based credit union will meet to decide the fate of a plan to merge with a central New York institution.
The board of directors of Horizons Federal Credit Union has approved a plan to merge with the Empower Federal Credit Union of Syracuse.
Horizons members are expected to vote on the proposal at a meeting in Binghamton next month.
The main office of the credit union is at 120 Main Street in Binghamton. It has offices in Endwell and Vestal.
The directors of Horizons and Empower have concluded that the combination would enable improved products and services. The move would also lower operating costs.
It is unknown what impact the merger would have on employment at the Broome County Horizons offices.

The credit union presidents – Mario DiFulvio of Horizons and John Wakefield of Empower – did not respond to calls asking for comments on the merger plan.
The special meeting of Horizons members will take place in Binghamton on July 27th.
