Melburnians could have reason to cheer proudly this weekend after the Victorian government confirmed limited capacity for both the A-League Grand Final and the NBL Grand Final.
Melbourne City FC fans will roar on their side at AAMI Park on Sunday, hosting Sydney FC, with the stadium at 50 percent capacity.
15,000 spectators will compete in the A-League as City prepares to dethrone Sydney as they chase a dominant third straight title.
A-League Commissioner Greg O’Rourke spoke about the Victorian government’s approval to ensure the game is played in Melbourne.
“Together with all of our stakeholders, we worked through several scenarios to ensure we were getting the best possible outcome for football and the fans,” said O’Rourke.
“The evolving restrictions pose constant challenges on every front – we need to protect everyone, run the best possible event, and make sure fans, players and clubs have the best possible experience.”
Also under strict COVID-19 restrictions, Melbourne United will host the Perth Wildcats at the John Caine Arena this Friday night, with a chance to seal the championship after winning two interstate games.
Acting Prime Minister James Merlino Confirmed on Wednesday that Friday night’s NBL game will allow up to 5,000 fans to watch United battle for the title.
The Wildcats have won four of the last five NBL titles and hope to keep the series alive with an away win. While United celebrated ultimate glory in 2018, coach Dean Vickerman aims to repeat his run with a consolidating performance in front of a limited audience.
