Years go by as Jean Short smiles in this beautiful replica of her 1962 wedding dress, made by her beloved granddaughter as a seamstress.
Amy Copland was inspired to recreate Jean’s fabulous satin and lace smock from a mantelpiece photo of her grandmother’s big day.
“She knew I would do it, but I wanted the result to be a surprise,” said Amy, 26.
“She was so happy when she saw it that she kept saying how beautiful it was. When she tried it on, it fitted like a glove. “
Jean, 79, whose husband Jack died of colon cancer in 1996 at the age of 58, said, “I’m so proud of Amy. Seeing the dress brought back many fond memories. “

Amy is usually the cloakroom manager for theater productions on cruise lines sailing the Caribbean.
When the pandemic hit in March 2020 and overseas travel stopped, she flew to the UK and formed a support bubble with Jean.
Amy is incredibly close to the retired cleaner who lives down the street in Dundee.
It took Amy two weeks to copy the dress, and it cost just under £ 100. The emotional reveal at Jean’s house was earlier this month.

Amy said, “I usually sail for months, but my grandmother and I have been keeping each other healthy since the lockdown.
“It was really difficult not even to hug her for the first six months of the lockdown, but when the restrictions eased we were able to create a support bubble.
“I’m just a walk away and I usually spend one night a week in their house.”
Jean paid between £ 10 and £ 20 for her original wedding dress that she gave to two friends who wore it to their weddings.

She married Jack on March 3, 1962 at St. James’s Church in Dundee and is certain that he would have approved of Amy’s work.
Jean said, “I first met Jack at a dance and we were engaged a year later.
“I found my wedding dress at a local store, but after loaning it to friends, I never saw it again. I don’t know what happened to the original dress, but I’m over the moon to have this newly created version as a keepsake. “
