Times letters: Bishops’ decision on same-sex weddings | Comment

Sir, The Archbishop of Canterbury is correct when he says the decision by bishops not to permit same-sex weddings in church but to allow blessings (news, Jan 19) will appear to go too far for some and not nearly far enough for others. However, he must also be aware that this reinforces the view of many that the Church of England is homophobic and unwelcoming to the gay community.

We do not know what discussions took place between the bishops but it would be helpful to know whether they considered Sir Tony Baldry’s suggestion (Thunderer, Jan 9) that CofE clergy should have discretion to undertake same-sex weddings.
